BE
KIND TO ANIMALS PROJECT
(Cat
and Dog Project-Relaunched)
“How is our Garfield cat
doing?”
“Is his leg better? Is he
happy?”
“Does he like living with
Ms. Zana? Is he coming back to SAS?”
The
questions came in fast and furious one morning during our connection time
Ms. Aidah had recently
talked to Ms. Zana and updated us on “Bobby.” Garfield has a new name and is
loving his new home.
“He has a forever home
just like my cat!” Arunika told the class. “That means he will be the pet
forever there. That is the best for sure.”
“What about all those
animals that don’t have a home?” Scout asked. “What about them?”
“Yeah, who takes care of
them?” Ein added her concern.
“All animals should have a
place that is so safe, right guys?” Florence piped in.
“Where do animals go that
don’t have a home?” A.J. asked the group.
We
looked online at the SPCA, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals. We looked into what they do…Give advice on how to take care of pets,
share stories about animals up for adoption, educate people as to promote the
humane and compassionate care of animals. We sang the “Do you See the Doggie in
the Shelter?” song and were hooked. We
had to find a way to help.
We spent a lot of time as
a class pouring over different aspects of the website, and came upon the
following from the Animal Kind Resource Book that guided the next phase of our
explorations on this project.
“We need to tell everyone
to be kind to animals! We don’t want them to be hurt!” Audrey stated what the
entire class was thinking.
“I wonder how we can help
them…” Mei was thinking hard.
“Posters!” Sanaa burst
out! “We can make signs to hang everywhere. The school has signs anyway about
other stuff.”
The
student got right to work making signs to educate others on how to take care of
animals. The room was buzzing with the passionate energy of purposeful four and
five year olds.
