Mango and Jelly's Place Space Part 3

Over a span of two weeks the students worked on various aspects of Mango and Jelly’s play space, and used a variety of different materials.  They tried out different things (ramps, tunnels, holes, doors) and communicated with each other about what they should try next. Interspersed with their planning was friendly conversation about everything from what the guinea pigs might do, to playing at home with family, to things they enjoy at school to favorite foods.  It was fascinating listening to these discussions. I was so incredibly proud watching our students work together and problem solve, as well as be so creative in what they were making!

Then came time for a trial! The students decided that we should see if the play space worked for Mango and Jelly!
“Let’s try!” –Jimmy
“Yeah, let’s take them out and see what they think of it!”  -Dylan
“Let’s be careful so they are not scared.” –Mena
“Do you think they will explore it? Or just look at it?” –Jasper
“I hope they don’t run!” –Hudson
“They won’t. They know it is us.” –Maxton
“You’re right. They know we are safe and love them.” –Si-Yoon
So we let the guinea pigs out. The kids were incredibly respectful and gave them space to explore. They watched where they went, what they did, and quietly whispered to each other. At first Mango and Jelly were a little bit shy. A couple of the students suggested we put some of their favorite food in so they feel comfortable, and just like that the piggies were exploring! We notice they didn’t go to the top levels, they really liked the tunnel spaces, and then…
“Oh no! Jelly has tape stuck on her!”
We had to do some quick hairdressing on Jelly to get the tape out!
