Friday Update February 27

February 27, 2015

Dear Parents,
It was another fun week of learning in the yellow starfish preK class!!!  We celebrated TWO birthdays!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIDDHARTH AND LUCAS! We continued with learning about Fairy Tales, and really worked with The Three Billy Goats Gruff!! Our classroom was filled with laughter and awesome storytelling as the cuties retold their versions of The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Hen, The Ugly Duckling, and many more. The fairytale Unit is all about language, vocabulary, details and sequencing, so we wanted to show the kiddos how it works.  We have been making puppets and props, acting out the stories, and using materials to retell.  Ask your child to retell one of our fairy tales to you—Remind him/her to add lots of details to make the story more interesting!  Good oral language, vocabulary, complete sentences, details and sequencing makes for great writers and readers later on! (And don’t forget to ask them what 3 things fairy tales have! J)

Some details from this week- We…
*learned the sound, letter formation and hand motion for the letter Gg.
*wrote Gg words, drew Gg pictures and cut out Gg pictures in our journals.
*added green glitter to our feely letter Gg.  Please add it to your ring and have your child review all of the letters.
*made Grilled Cheese sandwiches
*read many versions of the Three Billy Goats Gruff
*reviewed that fairy tales need Once Upon a Time, a good guy/”bad” guy, and a happy ending
*were introduced to other fairy tales such as The Ugly Duckling, The Three Little Kittens and The Little Red Hen, among others J
*practiced sequencing pictures (we put them in order)
*organized some very fun items into small, medium and large
*made a TROLL and described parts of its body
*participated in Garden math
*made troll and billy goat puppets and a river, hill and bridge for them so we could act out the fairy tale
*Made a pattern of small, medium, and large goats
*tallied how many Guys and Girls there are in our class compared to the other PreK classes
*painted a Three Billy Goats Gruff watercolor
*represented fairy tales in the block room
*we sorted things in our classroom to help clean up.  We remembered that we are BIG boys and girls and clean up the things we play with (this is what they are supposed to tell you at home, and encourage them to pick up their own toys J)

J  They have a little traveling cage and I can give you their food and hay.  Just let me know.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!  I hope you have had a wonderful day of love and friendship—we have had a whole week of it!  We do have amazing cuties! They were so happy to give out their valentines today!  And we had a VERY KIND day J

Here are some things that happened this week. We…
*learned the name, sound, and formation for the letter Oo.
*brainstormed/ listed/cut out words that begin with Oo and wrote them in our alphabet journals.
*added ovals to our feely letter Oo.  Please remember to add this to your feely letter ring and review all of the letters.
*participated in activities involved Ovals and Opposites
*painted a “still life” of our Orange tree
*weighed the oranges off of our real orange tree and decided how many cubes they weighed.  Then we counted the sections of our oranges and our friends oranges and decided if our orange had more sections or less
*Counted out 10 of each treat for our 100 day snack using our 100 board.
*Had a visit from ZERO THE HERO and did 100 exercises!
*counted 100 decorations for our 100 day cake.
*read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and talked about this fairy tale.
*learned a little about the zodiac animals, and watched a lion dance on youtube from New York so we will be prepared for our real one next week in the ECC
*Read Chinese New Year books (including a favorite called Two of Everything) as 100 day books and Valentine’s Day ones!
*made valentine bags and handed out valentines to our class friends (such good practice reading our friends names, taking turns and using our manners to say thank you!)  Thank you parents for helping the cuties with this activity!  It was worth it!  Such love in our class today!!! J

To RSVP: Please submit your interest via online form here.
~County Fair needs your help to volunteer!  With only 3 Saturdays until County Fair (February 28th), the event still needs over 150 Volunteers. County Fair would not be possible without everyone volunteering in the community. Please go to the Sign Up Genius link to volunteer.
